🏆 Vietnam–France Master’s Program in Applied Mathematics: Nurturing 160 PhD

On the afternoon of January 23, at the Executive House of Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), VNU-HCM held an online summary meeting on the Vietnam–France Master’s Program in Applied Mathematics (the Program). Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vũ Hải Quân, Director of VNU-HCM, chaired the meeting.

Since its inception in 2007, the Program has trained 277 Master’s graduates in Applied Mathematics, among whom 160 alumni have received scholarships and completed PhD programs at prestigious universities in Europe, America, and Asia. The Program will continue to be extended by VNU-HCM for the 2024–2028 period and will begin accepting applications this year.

Notable alumni of the Program include:

  • Prof. Phan Thành Nam, Institute of Mathematics, LMU Munich – the first Vietnamese recipient of the 2020 European Mathematical Society Prize;

  • Assoc. Prof. Nguyễn Thanh Bình, University of Science, VNU-HCM – honored with the 2021 Golden Globe Award;

  • Prof. Hồ Phạm Minh Nhật, full professor in Data Science, Statistics, and Machine Learning at the University of Texas – Austin.

The Program began in 2007 under the name “Joint Master’s Program in Applied Mathematics between VNU-HCM and the University of Orléans as well as several French institutions.” From 2011 to 2023, the Program continued to be approved by VNU-HCM under the name “Joint Master’s Degree Program in Applied Mathematics between the University of Science, VNU-HCM and four French higher education institutions.” During the 2011–2023 period, VNU-HCM provided a total funding of VND 13,458,000,000 to support the Program.
